- SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
- --------------------
-
- Solar activity was low. A long duration C1 flare began at
- 1347Z (end at 1514Z): there was apparently no corresponding
- optical signature. A 13 degree filament near S11W12 disappeared
- sometime between 17/2121Z and 18/1112Z.
-
- Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
- very low to low.
-
- The geomagnetic field was unsettled to active with some
- brief minor storm periods at high latitudes. This activity may
- be the result of lingering effects from yesterday's major storm
- or it could be effects from a favorably positioned coronal
- hole.
-
- Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
- expected to be mostly active for the next one to two days
- due to coronal hole effects. Conditions should subside to
- predominantly unsettled sometime on the third day.

-
- HF propagation conditions recovered fairly rapidly during
- the day today. Near-normal propagation conditions returned to
- the low and middle latitude paths, while high and polar
- latitude regions struggled with below-normal, but steadily
- improving conditions. All regions should see near-normal
- propagation by 21 April.

- Hi all... I have been interested in amateur radio for a couple of years
- and am ready to go and take the exam..
-
- I have reviewed question pools (as well as read manuals) regarding the
- Novice No-Code license as well as the technician plus class license.
-
- I am interested in transmitting on 2m. What license is required to
- transmit on 2m. I have played around with Radio Shack's 2m and really
- like it. It works pretty good for a Radio Shack product ;) .....
-
- I just need to know what license I need to be able to transmit on 2m.
-
- Also, if anyone knows where I can FTP either a text file of questions, or
- a program that will give me questions regarding novice and/or techicial
- license. The program I currently have is out of date.
-
- Thanks...

- It depends on what you're trying to do. Both 440 and 1200 MHz work pretty
- well along large boreholes. Many cavers use 49, 146, 440 and 1200 MHz for
- liason between the top and bottom of large (or noisy) pits. If you want
- to penetrate rock for communication purposes, the usual method used isn't
- actually radio but magnetic induction coupling at frequencies between
- 1KHz and about 200 KHz. The lower frequencies are useful for location
- since the dipole fields generated by the loop 'antennas' are undistorted
- by the effects of the conductive medium. At higher frequencies quadrature
- fields begin to appear which is actually an advantage for communications
- since 'antenna' orientation is less critical. The higer frequencies are
- preferable for voice since the coupling and bandwidth are increased. If
- you would like to discuss it further, email me.

- I found the Good HF propagation while I was in Hong Kong

-
- I'll echo that in case you haven't figured it out yet. You're software is
- broken. If you are running a PC under MS-DOS (as I'll assume since you are
- NOT running Unix and CNEWS) install SNEWS. It is a threaded newsreader for
- IBM systems running MS-DOS. It is compatible with UUCP. It is available via
- ftp from a number of sources. If you do not have ftp access, send me e-mail
- and I'll provide you with the details on how to get it from me on a diskette.
-
- This is not at all a condescending attitude. It is simply the truth. Your
- software is broken. I'm offering to fix it for you.
-
- As a single user running an IBM clone, the package pair of SNEWS and UUPC
- make an excellent team for both mail and news. About the only limitations
- I've seen with SNEWS is crosposting to more than 2-3 groups and trying to
- read a bit of news that was about 180K in size (and binary) that some fool
- posted.

-
-
-
- *****************************************************************
-
- Special Note: Amateur Radio licenses usually arrive between 8 and
- 10 weeks after the test session. The FCC considers their
- processing time to be 90 days--from the date they receive the
- application. The FCC usually receives the application one
- to two weeks after the test session (once the VE Team and the
- coordinating VEC have completed their processing).
-
-
- Note: Codeless Technician to Technician w/HF upgraders (who pass a
- Morse code test) will not receive a new license from the FCC.
- The existing Technician license plus the CSCE conveying the Morse
- code test credit is the only documentation issued for use of
- the additional HF privileges.
-
- *****************************************************************
-
- The following test session information is provided by the
- ARRL/VEC for the upcoming six to eight week period. For
- further information, please contact the test session CONTACT
- PERSON at the telephone number provided. If necessary, you
- may contact the ARRL/VEC at 203-666-1541 x282 for additional
- information. Electronic mail may be forwarded to the ARRL/VEC
- via USENET at "bjahnke@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
- MCI ID: 653-2312 or 215-5052.
-
- Although the test session information presented here does
- not indicate whether walk-ins are accepted or not, most test
- sessions do allow walk-ins. We encourage you, however, to
- always contact the CONTACT PERSON at the telephone number
- provided so that the VE Team is aware that you be attending
- the test session.
-
-
-
- STILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAM?
-
- If you would like information on how to become licensed; or
- how to locate Amateur Radio clubs, instructors, licensing
- classes and/or Novice examiners in your area; please contact
- the ARRL Educational Activities Department (EAD) at 203-666-
- 1541 x219. The EAD can also provide information on

- Something seems "rotten in Denmark."
- Is it?
-
- The following message was to me, K1OIK, and now we know the reason Luck
- Hurder was dismissed from the ARRL. Luck really sounds like a criminal?

- Msg #3460 From: KZ1Z Date: 17-Apr 1204Z Subj: Re: FYI - ARRL
- Hi Burt,
- Many thanks for your note. The issue was indeed a stupid one.
- HQ/Directors wanted copies of all correspondence to and from ARRL
- officials everywhere. Thus, Section leaders would have to copy
- everuything to their respective Directors. No problem, as the mass of
- what was asked would probably kill the policy of its own wieght. The
- problem...Luck advised the Section leadership of the new policy.
- Imagine advising the leadership of the institution of a new policy,
- afterall the leadership didn't get the word from the directors that
- such was being done. Really a stupid situation, which should have been
- handled in a more professional manner. Just because a Director
- somewhere got bent out of shape, that is no reason to terminate an
- employee.
- Thanks for your interest.

- Well, at night you might be able to go outside and watch the aurora
- instead. I've heard it was quite spectacular in Wisconsin a few nights ago
- (course we never see it here in Texas, sigh...)
